Water vs. Silicone Lube: The Only Guide You Need

Lubricant is the single cheapest upgrade to your intimate life. Yet many people are unsure which kind to buy. Here is what you need to know.

Water-based

The universal choice. Water-based lube is safe with every toy and with latex condoms, and it rinses clean with water. It can dry out over time, and a few drops of water will revive it.

Silicone-based

Long-lasting and silky, silicone lube is ideal in the shower or for massage. It is safe with latex condoms, but it can degrade silicone toys, so always check before you combine them.

Oil-based

Lovely for massage, but oil can weaken latex condoms. Keep it away from them entirely.

What to avoid

If you have sensitive skin, look for formulas without glycerin, parabens or strong fragrance, and always patch test warming or tingling gels first.
